A Good, Old-Fashioned, American Love Story

Set in 1952 in a small Michigan town, "A Good, Old-Fashioned, American Love Story" follows Samson (Sam) Blake the summer after he graduates high school. Sam knows he is gay but struggles with accepting himself knowing how gay people are treated in his world. Because of his sensitivity, Sam has always been bullied by other boys his age, and as a result, is very introverted.

Sam is prepared to remain in the closet for his entire life, not having any reason to act on his feelings. Then, Neil Andrews moves to town, and Sam can’t deny his feelings any longer. As they get to know each other, their relationship blooms into something more than friendship.

As Sam and Neil navigate first love, they must also be cautious of the time period that they live in. The hardships they face lead Sam to decide what he wants his life to look like. He can have Neil, but only in secret. At first, it seems to Sam that having Neil is the most important thing, but as he grows to know himself better, he starts to wonder if it’s enough.
